Knitting is healthy! One thing I always comment on to beginning knitters is that it's a meditative hobby. When you first learn to knit, it can help to count each step as you're making the knit stitch. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.

Repeating this mantra allows you to focus on what your hands are doing, and keeps your mind in the present moment. It's almost impossible to think about your To-do list, the fight you had with your spouse, your stressful job, or the fact that Christmas is one week away, and you still have so many friends and family to shop for.

Last year, there was a New York Times article on the health benefits to knitting (and crocheting and crafting in general). It has been shown that knitting can help memory and brain function, enhance social skills, and improve math skills. Yarn crafts can also help you quit smoking or lose weight by keeping your hands busy rather than smoking or eating. Knitting or crocheting keeps your fingers dexterous as you age, can boost your mood, and give you a sense of purpose if you make items for charity organizations.

See? Knitting and crocheting are GOOD for you! Why do you knit? What health benefits do you see as you craft?
